Chicken Facts
Did you know....
- Today's domestic chicken most likely originated from Asia.
- In poultry markets, fowl commonly means a full-grown female bird.
- Young birds of both sexes, such as broilers and fryers, are called chickens.
- Male chickens raised on poultry farms are called cocks and/or roosters.
- Female chickens more than a year old are usually called hens.
- Females less than a year old are called pullets.
- Baby chickens of either sex are called chicks.
- Castrated males are called capons.
- A modern poultry farm may have several hundred thousand or even more than a million laying hens.
- They mainly have short wings that make them incapable of flying (unless it is across a very short distance)
- Laid head to claw, KFC chickens consumed worldwide would stretch some 275,094 miles.
- Roosters crow. Hens don't(they just cluck).
- Chickens are injected with hormones for juicier thighs and a meatier texture.
- Chickens will eat just about anything put in front of them.
